Sunday March 7th 2010 - Movement with Bryan Burroughs
A professional actor and one of Irelands leading movement directors, Byran originally hails from Carlow and was one of the stars of The GB Shaw's inaugural show "Johnny Patterson- The Singing Irish Clown". The Irish Times praised his "breathtaking ability" in the show and said his performance "provided some of the most visually impressive and playful moments in the production". Bryan has worked with The Abbey Theatre, The Gate Theatre, Trinity College Dublin, New York University/Tisch School of the Arts and The Accademia Dell Arte in Arezzo Italy, among others.
Sunday March 14th 2010- Voice and Text with Andrea Ainsworth
The Voice Director of The Abbey Theatre since 1995 and one of the core tutors on the BA in Acting Studies at TCD for the last fourteen years, Andrea works closely with the acting companies in both the Abbey and the Peacock Theatres on all aspects of voice production, accent and text. She has worked with most of the independent theatre companies in Ireland as a voice and dialect coach and coaches professional actors on an individual basis.
Andrea's workshop will employ a series of exercises for breathing, resonance and articulation, to discover the power and flexibility in the voice. Using extracts from The Playboy of the Western World, the workshop will examine language, imagery and rhythmic shifts - and look at ways to embody these with ease and energy. This approach combines technical work on the voice with the imaginative work of the actor.

The surprise winner of this year's Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, Departures tells the story of a concert cellist named Daigo who undergoes a transformation following the death of his father and the dissolution of his Tokyo orchestra.
Having spent a fortune on a new cello for his now-defunct ensemble, Daigo retreats, guilt-ridden, to his picturesque hometown in northern Japan to look for work, with his obedient wife Mika in tow.
He responds to an ad for a company called "Departures," thinking it's a travel agency, but discovers that the company caters to morticians who perform "encoffinments"—highly stylized and meticulous ceremonies to prepare bodies for burial or cremation, an industry which carries such a taboo in Japan.
He cannot refuse the salary but how will find the courage to admit to Mika what he does for a living?

This month's Shaw Sessions is privileged to host the Edward Simon Trio with a programme of original pieces, Latin, Celtic and jazz songs.
A real coup for The Shaw Sessions, this is a rare opportunity to see one of the world's great contemporary jazz pianists in the intimate setting of The Shaw Sessions with support from Carlow's own local talent.
Originally from Venezuela and now living in the US, virtuoso pianist Edward Simon grew up in a family of musicians, surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of Latin and Caribbean music. This shines through in his playing and writing.
Edward is considered part of a new generation of international musicians who have grown up studying classical, jazz and Latin American music, but are inventing their own take on the established forms.
Edward is joined by renowned international Irish jazz musicians Michael Coady (bass) and Stephen Keogh (drums).
Not to be missed!
Workshop
The trio will also give a workshop on the afternoon of the concert. This is open to all - musicians and non-musicians alike - and will cover Latin American rhythms, pulse training and rhythm section and ensemble playing.

From the director of 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days director Cristian Mingiu and his colleagues comes this selection of short stories reflecting the vagaries of life in Ceausescu's Romania.
Although the vignette of a lovelorn lorry driver seeking to win an inn-keeper's heart by smuggling her illicit egg treats the era of food shortages with a bittersweet twinge, there's more laughter in the episode where a suburban family face the challenge of slaughtering a pig without alerting their apartment block neighbours - and indeed in the delightful closing story, which goes to show that you can sell air for a profit if you're clever enough.
